The phenomenon is unavoidable and can present a danger on industrial sites, both to the durability of equipment and to the health and safety of personnel. So how do you protect yourself against <strong>electrostatic hazards in potentially explosive atmospheres?<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is an electrostatic discharge generated?<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>An electrostatic discharge (ESD)<\/strong> is generated whenever two bodies or materials with different static charges are brought into contact and then separated. This phenomenon is known as triboelectricity. <\/p>\n\n<p>Inevitably, one of the two materials gains electrons and the other loses them, creating an electrical potential difference.<strong>Static electricity<\/strong> occurs when positive and negative charges combine.   <\/p>\n\n<p>These energy transfers are permanent and mostly imperceptible. In everyday life, they manifest themselves as a harmless micro-spark when putting on a sweater or rubbing a plastic comb against dry hair. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong><em>NB: insulating materials can carry electrostatic charges, which is why it&#8217;s also important to <a href=\"https:\/\/adf-systemes.fr\/en\/our-technical-solutions-atex-and-industrial-equipment\/\">use ATEX equipment<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is electrostatic risk?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Electrostatic discharges only become dangerous if the static charge is allowed to build up for too long.  <\/p>\n\n<p>On an industrial site, ESD can damage electronic equipment. This involves an audit &#8211; to be carried out by a certified body :   <\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Identify flammable atmospheres for each zone<\/strong> and assess the energy required to ignite them.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Estimate the sensitivity of a flammable or explosive atmosphere<\/strong> to ignition. The sensitivity of an area to ignition is measured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dekra-process-safety.fr\/laboratoire-de-tests-dekra-process-safety\/tests-d-explosivite-et-inflammabilite-des-poussieres-et-poudres-dekra-process-safety\/test-d-inflammabilite-des-poudres-energie-minimale-d-inflammation-emi.html\">EMI (minimum ignition energy). <\/a>  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Quantify the energy of discharges<\/strong> that may occur, and estimate their different energy levels in different areas and situations.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Compare <\/strong>the energy that can be released in the event of a discharge with the energy required to cause an explosion or ignition, depending on the zone.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Study the ability of equipment and materials<\/strong> to retain or accumulate static electricity.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mastering electrostatic phenomena<\/h3>\n\n<p>Once <strong>the electrostatic risk assessment<\/strong> has been completed, it is generally necessary to take additional protective measures in ATEX zones:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Remove insulation products not required <\/strong>for industrial activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avoid electrostatic charging<\/strong> by using<a href=\"https:\/\/adf-systemes.fr\/en\/grounding-system\/\"> efficient earthing systems<\/a> or equipotential bonding.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Opt for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rostaing.com\/epi-zones-electrostatiques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anti-DES PPE<\/a>: <\/strong> shoes, gloves, wristbands.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do you want to minimize the impact of electrostatic hazards in ATEX zones?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/adf-systemes.fr\/en\/\">ADF Syst\u00e8mes<\/a> makes it a point of honor to help you choose the products and solutions best suited to your industrial safety and risk management needs.
