These accidents are often the result of a lack of awareness of the dangers associated with <strong>potentially explosive atmospheres<\/strong>, and a lack of preventive and protective equipment.   <\/p>\n\n<p>However,<strong> ATEX zones<\/strong> are now covered by European directives. These allow facility managers to take preventive action to avoid their occurrence.   <\/p>\n\n<p>How are<strong> explosive atmospheres<\/strong> formed? In what type of industry are they found? What are the most common sources of ignition?  <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is ATEX?<\/h2>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General<\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>An ATEX (or ATmosph\u00e8re EXplosible)<\/strong> is an atmosphere where one or more explosions can potentially take place.  <\/p>\n\n<p>An explosion, on the other hand, consists of a very rapid increase in volume and release of energy, with the generation of high temperatures and gases.  <\/p>\n\n<p>It can be<strong> of physical origin<\/strong>, due to the bursting of an element whose internal pressure is unsustainable, or <strong>chemical,<\/strong> in the latter case resulting from a chemical reaction.<\/p>\n\n<p>Gases, vapors and flammable dusts contain unstable compounds that can cause explosions, and these risks can be prevented by<a href=\"https:\/\/adf-systemes.fr\/en\/our-technical-solutions-atex-and-industrial-equipment\/\">purchasing ATEX equipment<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n<p>In accordance with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inrs.fr\/risques\/explosion\/reglementation-textes-reference.html\"><strong>EN 1127 &#8211; 1<\/strong><\/a>an explosion is a sudden oxidation or decomposition reaction involving a rise in temperature or pressure, or both simultaneously.  <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conditions  <\/h3>\n\n<p>For ATEX to exist, three conditions must be met:  <\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Presence of an oxidizer<\/strong>. This is generally air. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Presence of a combustible<\/strong>. Flammable substances are gases, vapors or dusts.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A source of ignition<\/strong> or very high temperature. The most frequent sources of ignition are static electricity, lightning, open flames, mechanical sparks, hot surfaces, etc.   <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>These three conditions form what is commonly known as the fire triangle.<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/adf.majoliedemo.com\/7154-tout-ce-que-vous-devez-savoir-le-guide-ultime?neo_campaign=guide-gratuit&amp;neo_medium=click_popup&amp;uuid=9cb08676-4e44-4d7f-bedd-511509558032\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"269\" data-src=\"https:\/\/adf-systemes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/banniere-adf-guide-1024x269.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7044 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/adf-systemes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/banniere-adf-guide-980x258.webp 980w, https:\/\/adf-systemes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/banniere-adf-guide-480x126.webp 480w\" data-sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/269;\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where can you find ATEX?  <\/h2>\n\n<p>Technically, all industries using flammable substances (gases, dusts, vapors) present an explosion risk.  <\/p>\n\n<p>They are therefore subject to <strong>ATEX regulations. <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p>These include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecologie.gouv.fr\/risques-technologiques-directive-seveso-et-loi-risques\">high-risk industrial sites (SEVESO)<\/a>, as well as metal processing plants, paint shops, flour silos, wood processing plants, refineries and even waste recycling centers&#8230;  <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to avoid ATEX?<\/h2>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>There are two main regulatory texts concerning ATEX.  <\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The first is aimed at plant managers <strong>(Directive 99\/92\/EC) <\/strong>and sets out all the minimum health and safety requirements for personnel likely to be exposed to ATEX.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The second text is aimed at manufacturers<strong> (Directive 94\/0\/EC)<\/strong> and lays down the minimum safety requirements for <a href=\"https:\/\/adf-systemes.fr\/en\/all-you-need-to-know-about-atex-marking-of-your-equipment\/\">ATEX protection equipment and systems. <\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>When it comes to detecting, determining and classifying ATEX zones, plant managers must comply with the requirements of <a href=\"https:\/\/adf-systemes.fr\/zone-atex-nf-en-60079-10-1\/\">standard NF EN 60079-0-1<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n<p>We also need to classify the hazardousness of flammable substances and carry out an occupational and technological risk assessment.  <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ATEX glossary: what to remember?  <\/h2>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Flash point of a flammable liquid:<\/strong> Temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapor to form a flammable mixture with air.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>Note: Some substances have their flash point at negative temperatures.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>MIE (Minimum Ignition Energy): <\/strong>Minimum energy that must be supplied to the mixture, in the form of a flame or spark, to cause ignition.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>It is expressed in Joules (for example, the spark from a spark plug is about 1J).<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>IEMS (Interstice Exp\u00e9rimental Maximal de S\u00e9curit\u00e9) : <\/strong>Maximum thickness of the layer of air between 2 parts of an internal chamber of a test Apparatus which, when the internal mixture is ignited, prevents ignition of the same external gas mixture through a shoulder 25 mm long.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Would you like to learn more about the risk of explosion to protect yourself?  <\/h3>\n\n<p>ADF Syst\u00e8mes makes it a point of honor to help you choose the products and solutions best suited to your industrial safety and risk management needs.
