Indeed, certain substances can self-ignite under certain conditions. Here&#8217;s everything you need to know about <strong>self-ignition temperature.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the auto-ignition temperature (TAI)?<\/h2>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>The auto-ignition temperature (AIT) is the lowest temperature at which a gaseous mixture (air-vapor)<strong> ignites spontaneously in the absence of an ignition source<\/strong>, such as a flame or spark.  <\/p>\n\n<p>In reality, ignition results from the production of vapors, which are themselves caused by a sufficiently high temperature in the atmosphere.  <\/p>\n\n<p>This is referred to as the <strong>self-ignition<\/strong> or <strong>ignition point<\/strong>, or the spontaneous ignition point.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Point_d%27auto-inflammation\">auto-ignition point<\/a>should not be confused with the<strong> flash point,<\/strong> i.e. the temperature at which <strong>self-combustion<\/strong>, once initiated, can continue. Temperatures vary according to <strong>a number of factors<\/strong>, such as :   <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>partial pressure of oxygen ;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>altitude ;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>  humidity level ;  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the time required for ignition.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The temperature at which a gas mixture can ignite decreases as the pressure or oxygen concentration increases.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Above the auto-ignition point, a vapor-air mixture ignites on its own. In fact,<strong> the mere contact of hot air is sufficient. <\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n<p>How can we explain this phenomenon?  <\/h2>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>Most flammable gases and liquids have an <strong>auto-ignition temperature<\/strong> of <strong>between 300\u00b0C and 550\u00b0C. <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p>However, some have very low auto-ignition points, e.g. <strong>160\u00b0 for diethyl ether<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here is a brief list of gases and liquids whose TAI you need to know:  <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Auto-ignition temperatures of gases<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diethyl ether: 160\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Butane: 287\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acetylene: 305\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Propane: 450\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Methane: 455\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethane: variable 520\/630\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethylene: variable 490\u00b0\/540\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dihydrogen: 571\u00b0C  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Self-ignition temperatures of liquids<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gasoline: 280\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Benzine: variable 230\/450\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethyl alcohol: 425\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acetone: variable 540\u00b0\/630\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Benzol: 590\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oil: variable 250\u00b0\/450\u00b0.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diesel: 330\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heavy lubricating oil: 440\u00b0C<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Would you like to know more about the risks associated with self-ignition of gases and liquids in ATEX zones?
